I have up for grabs an external CD reader/writer which ran on 16 bit, and IIRC, through PCMCIA.
I'll dig it out if anyone is interested in it, and enlarge on available details. PCMCIA card not available - took (486) flaptop into a shop to see if they could source a battery for it, and when I went back, the shop had gone - or rather, the occupier had.
