I've swapped to Cinnamon Mint on a laptop (much better) and it's asking me whether I want to use a local mirror for updates. I've goggled so I now know what they are. What I'd like to know is, are there any downsides to using them?

Good choice in Mint!
It's easy to grab local mirrors, although with a fast line I suspect that it makes little difference.
Go to "Update Manager" and choose "Edit|Software Sources". After you've entered your password another window will pop up. Under the "Official Repositories" tab (on the left), there are two mirrors listed on the right, so just click on the respective long button. Let the process run in order to find all the sensible mirrors available to you, and choose whichever is fastest/closest to you.
I'm using EvoWise CDN for Main (Sylvia), and Bytemark (Ubuntu) for Base (Xenial).
Click "Update the cache" before you leave that screen.
Cheers, Laurie.
