I'm not terribly up to date with sendmail (it's now one of the first bits to get replaced if possible... exim with eximconfig, or postfix are good choices), but it sounds like you haven't told sendmail where to send to. If you run the command "mailq" as root, you should see your emails, hopefully.
OK, to tell it where to send to, find the "smart relay" line in your sendmail config file (.cf or .m4, depending on which you use -- I think it's the DS line in the .cf file, but the m4 file may overwrite it if the system uses it) and add the name of your ISP's outgoing mail server. Then restart sendmail and the command "runq" hopefully will clear the backlog. If it does, then: congratulations, you have a spooling outgoing mail server!
