Thank you everyone, very much. (Also for the welcomes... :D) This combination worked perfectly:
(Hold down CTL + ALT + F1 if you are stuck on the blank Xwindow screen, this will bring you to a log-in console on tty1, then, as root, type
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 # XFree86 4.x
I have another question, if that is not too much asking (I truly am a newbie in search of liberation from MS enslavement). I have installed windowmaker as a window manager, but the thing is that it is started "on top" of Gnome 1.4. I tried following some advice given on the debian website, but I couldn't get rid of gnome at startup. Where do I make gdm not start so I can use wmaker instead? Thank you for ANY help, as usual. Francesco.
PS I would be interested in attending some meeting, or perhaps at least over IRC (I am in Essex, with no transport, so I don't know how I could get to attend a meeting, which is where IRC would come in useful...:)).

may be preferable in some circumstances.
Might be worth doing an
apt-get install read-edid
first and then the reconfigure should hopefully detect the resolutions your monitor supports automatically (if it's not ancient).
