As those at the Kit meet saw (some in disgust) I tend to use Gnome pretty much as Ubuntu packaged it (but with the Compiz extensions)
The full eyecandy approach is not to everybodys taste I am sure (I'd hasten to add that the full Compiz feature set I had enabled does not reflect the settings in my own user profile, I hate the floppy windows for a start)
Up until about this time last year I was running KDE on SuSE. But after trying Ubuntu I found that I preferred Gnome, I am not sure why but I think it is purely an ascetic thing (also on this hardware Gnome seems a little faster)
I tried installing the Elightenment packages on Ubuntu once...it was possibly the most frightening desktop experience I have ever had, the fonts and menus looked awful and I couldn't figure out how to do anything much with it (Didn't try too hard because it looked so bad, but maybe that's down to the ubuntu packages)
