Do not use make world: A lot of older documentation recommends using make world for this. Doing that skips some important steps and should only be used if you are sure of what you are doing. For almost all circumstances make world is the wrong thing to do, and the procedure described here should be used instead.
21.4.1 The Canonical Way to Update Your System To update your system, you should check /usr/src/UPDATING for any pre-buildworld steps necessary for your version of the sources and then use the following procedure:
# make buildworld # make buildkernel # make installkernel # reboot
(I have to admit that the person who told me about 'make world' some years ago is precisely the sort of person who would be very exactly sure of what he was doing).
