In XMMS (as X11amp became), you might need to make sure that it's using the right output plugin. I have "esd" selected for playing under Gnome, but you might find that you need OSS or ALSA, depending on your sound system. I have no idea how KDE's sound works now.
Are there any other good simple MP3 players individuals can recommend for Redhat 6.0 using Gnome or KDE
mpg123 (and graphical frontends like gqmpeg) is quite good. Actually, I think XMMS's mp3 player is based on it.
