The "lib.so" cache is maintained by the command "ldconfig" (see "man ldconfig"). You may need to run this by hand, with appropriate arguments. If that gets it to work, you may need to modify the boot-time invocation of "ldconfig" (don't know where to find this on Debian ... ).
Interesting. I had previously noticed that dynamic linking seems to work much faster on Linux than on HP-UX, i.e. dynamic link programs load faster, so I wonder if this cache is part of the reason.
After my first experience with HP-UX's slow loading they introduced fastbind - a system of caching dynamic link information with the exectable to speed it up.
