Most of them are fairly simple "exec foowm" type scripts. Either the manuals or the INSTALL should tell you. I think WindowMaker has a wmaker-install command or similar to help.
I've found most of what I wanted to know, wdm has a script /usr/local/etc/wdm/Xsession which it starts with. If a user's $HOME/.xsession is found (and executable) then that is run, otherwise /usr/local/etc/wdm/Xclients is run. Xclients attempts (rather badly) to provide a menu of possible window managers.
All I need now is to find a script to start fvwm2, if I just try starting fvwm2 from my .xsession file it doesn't work.
