You could try Minix or some Linux 1.x from that vintage. ;-)
Seriously though: 1) Try Xubuntu and see if it's fast enough. Cut it down if it's sluggish. 2) How about the Fluxbox/Openbox window managers on a modern Linux distro?
Some distros are specifically made for i686 and won't run on older hardware, so watch out.
