I've just purchased an Advent 8470 laptop from (horror!) PC World for around 2,500 which has a Pentium III 700 processor, 128Mb RAM, 12Gb hard drive, S3 Savage MX video card with 3D support, 6xDVD drive and Windows 98. Runs Linux exceptionally well. Also includes 3 years warranty - theft insurance included on first year, accidental and loss on all years.
I've successfully run the pig dog of an OS, Windows 2000 Advanced Server on it without any fuss and having also purchased a license for VMWare, I'm (or have been) running SuSE 6.4, RedHat 6.2, Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
All in all, I'd highly recommend this laptop - it has good standard components and thus makes a good replacement for a desktop!
I here a lot of good stuff from the Sony Vivao stable, as well as Fuji. Gateway also make great laptops, but they appear to be a little slow for my tastes.
Regards,
Martyn

I am thinking of getting a new laptop, now that everything becomes so INconvinient ever after I left the UK - and miss my lovely Siemens Nixdoft computer. (Tokyo sucks!)
My question: which one's the best? Give your wishful thinking please.
List of my considerations:
- Main use is "web development" and "Palm Development"
- Might need to use both "client" and "server" dually. Maybe enough to run JavaBean and Servlet (argh).
- Require Windows - preferably better if Windows run in Linux (using VMWare, for example)
- No DVD necessary
- Size doesn't matter, and I really don't care.
- Available companies: All Japanese companies you can come
up with + Compaq + Dell + Gateway.
