I have resolved my problems. I used a different machine to install Linux Mint on this hard drive then popped it in the Umax laptop.
It boots and works no problem. Everything working including wireless and sound and is pretty quick too.
Secondly, yes I do have to work with what I have and other than my laptop which I used webmail for Windows Live mail I use a Sony Ericsson P990i with its built in mail client to access my Windows Live mail account.

I concur that that would be nice, but having just glanced at Simon's headers, I'd say that it may well be out of the scope of his current mail client...
(Appears to be EPOC Mail then talking to MSN servers - RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY!)
EPOC Mail appears to not bother with anything as useful as a In-Reply-To or References header... Those would be too useful!
