Hi all,
As I live just a few streets away from an ADSL-enabled area, I'm pondering going halves with a friend that can get ADSL and then setting up a wireless connection from his house to mine.
The trouble is, I know *nothing* about wireless networking ;-)
If anyone out there in ALUGland does, could you give me a few hints? I want to know:
- what are my options?
Most economical now is 802.11b 11Mbps spread spectrum
- what range I can get?
How long is a peice of string, its radio, sods law says that it will go 1000ft further than you want and 10ft short at the same time. However having said that we have had 13miles!
- what hardware is required?
a PCi network card, a length of antenna cable (RG 8 coax or similair), a antenna of some kind. repeat at each end.
- likely cost?
It is worth budgeting 150-200 ukp per end (maybe cheaper depending on what you get) that is based on getting a PCI card and putting it in a PC, if you decided to use a wireless access point then add 200ukp each end.
Looking forward to someone telling me it'll cost 50p and give me gigabytes a second to play with...
depending on range and weather expect 1-11Mbps. ADSL will be the weak point here!
Thanks
