I have gotten hold of a Netgear MR814 and am trying to get it set up with my Tiscali broadband, using a Sagem F@st dsl modem.
/me doesn't have much to say about Tiscali that is nice... They just couldn't supply me with a login and password that actually worked.
Anyway, the problem I have is that the cable that currently goes from the modem to the PC ends with a USB wotsit, wheras the router needs it to be an ethernet one. Tiscali sell something called a RJ45 Network Cable (1) - is this what I need?
Can't say anything about the Sagem modem (if you want another one complete with filters, just holler).. I tried the Netgear DG632 (still wouldn't work with Tiscali) which is a simple modem/firewall. Found the one I had purchased new had a vintage firmware installed and was as buggy as hell.. Eventually, I settled on running ipCop and using a Thompson SpeedTouch 330 modem which worked first time. Not with Tiscali I might add...
Also, I have been supplied with a USB wireless adaptor, but would plugging the router straight into the PC with an ethernet cable produce better results? (before you ask, the wireless is for my laptop!)
Cable is always better for security, but it still doesn't solve the conectivity problem between the router and the phone line. Using a USB<->RJ45 adaptor is not going to work as the USB interface would normally power the modem, and if the modem needs any firmware uploaded, you'll be stuck if the router can't handle it.
