It's the heatsink that's the issue. It's a custom thing with a circular cutout for the fan, which is screwed down into the heatsink in two places. I wondered if anyone had every found someone who sells anything other than the square-frame 40mm fans, or who had managed to rejuvenate one which was (apparently) coming to the end of it's life.
