I'm sorry but it really does sound like you have a hardware fault if both OS don't recognise it. Is it a removable drive? if so have you tried reseating it? Does the Bios see the drive? Can you boot from the CD drive?
It could be the ide chipset has become faulty, or perhaps the connection to the drive on the motherboard has become loose or broken. It does sound as though the drive is getting power though, and the mechanical bits of it are working just perhaps the controller has died.
