You should be aware that it's a little tricky to find X4 rather than X3 in dselect, as they're being run at the same time.
Try installing 'xserver-xfree86' + deps, and see where that gets you. The X 4 config (/etc/X11/XFree86Config-4) is much simpler than X 3 days.
I guess if the laptop has a TFT display, you might need to limit the resolutions X is allowed to use? See other thread, but I don't know whether my suggestion helped him or not.
