Absolutely! I use joe, which is a WordStar clone, coincidentally the first full-screen editor I used back in the days of CP/M, and pretty damned good. I really can't face vi or vim, and emacs is over-kill for me, so joe it is.
I started out with joe, but use vim now. You might want to try jed, just for the syntax highlighting (which I can no longer live without in vim).
