I don't know if you're doing it wrong, or if there's a problem with some Ubuntu systems, but we couldn't get that desktop printer config tool working on one of our managed systems, so we pointed a web browser at http://localhost:631/ and configured printers that way. I suspect it was a permissions problem, but once we'd got it working one way, I didn't care/have time enough to debug further yet.
