Maybe I'm missing something, but is there a single protocol for implementing your "NAS"? eg, Coda, AFS, NFS, SMBFS or something else? RedHat did some work on high availablility linux. This sounds like their FailOver Services model. The software is probably out of shape. (http://ha.redhat.com/)
