Try installing 'xserver-xfree86' + deps, and see where that gets you. The X 4 config (/etc/X11/XFree86Config-4) is much simpler than X 3 days.
Isn't there an X -configure or similar? X 4 crashes here, though. Bug is known and supposedly fixed in 4.2, but the other problems with 4.2 mean that it's taking a while to enter Debian.
If using X 4, try:
dpkg-reconfigure --p=low xserver-xfree86

It worked for my work machine with an i810 graphics chip.
