I don't think I'd bother building a complete machine myself now, if I was going to get a whole new system I'd just go and buy something as close as possible to what I wanted from just about any old place. I'd want to know make of motherboard maybe to have an idea of the 'quality' but most seem to be pretty functional nowadays. There don't seem to be any manufacturers producing rubbish like 'PC Chips' did a few years ago.
I do upgrade though, I think it can be worth a 'heart transplant' or two before things have changed so much that new motherboards won't run in the current case.
