All,
As many of you may remember I asked a couple of weeks ago for advice on printing and printers under linux. The outcome of which was I visited the linuxprinting.org web site where they have the brother 1270N as a well recommended printer with Post script emulation built in, also 10/100 ethernet built in. The cost for this printer from dabs direct 363.08 + P&P. Alternatively mentioned on the web site is the printer my dad owns which is a brother 1250. This is a Bi-di parallel port version of the 1270N without the PS emulation. This is availiable from staples locally at 219. The 1250 uses ghostscript to print, with the printer emulating PCL5 (laserjet 4 driver).
The question is does the PS emulation and network capability make the extra 150[1] worthwhile. I intent to use the printer mainly for printing college assignments and documentation. The user base will probably be only me, but the printer must work directly from my linux box but also across the network, either using a PC as a print server, or directly from my Sun boxes?
Can anyone advise me on this issue? Or can anyone recommend a cheaper alternative? using an Inkjet is not an alternative I will consider.
Also how easy is it to print using Ghostscript as a printer driver? I am used to the windows printing at work which is done on a laserjet 8150DN over a 10Mbit ethernet.
Thanks
D
[1] Unless someone can recommend anywhere cheaper.
