Good question, I will try to give that a try. Actually, running from a Kubuntu live CD would be useful diagnostically to see if it's something else I have installed. CPU was at ~100% this morning; the PC's been unused (but left running) since Thursday.
Also what is the full command line shown for Xorg (running htop, ps -ef or ps aux or pressing "c" in top will show more detail than bare top alone). Maybe the KDE display manager is playing up.
