Many thanks to all for replies to new kernel question: just back at my desk after ten blissful days away. All seems to have gone well, with lilo happy to give me a choice of kernels to boot into....2.4.18 seems ok so far. Let's see if it cures the "do_try_to_free_pages_update" problem! Cheers, all! Jenny.
