P.S. For Steve: sadly I think the scanner has gone on to the choir invisible...
Well, I'm not called Steve, but I did get my Epson scanner working under Mint 19.1, eventually. It was a considerable PITA. What kind of scanner have you? Perhaps I can help?
Rgds,
H.
Thing is, Huge, I've also tried plugging it in and nothing happened,
Define "nothing". The scanner powers up, but when you plug it into the PC nothing happens?
Bev
You may recall, the scanner is "dumb".
It won't do anything without being configured first, and without a driver file (actually a ROM file) called SnapScan_1212U_2.bin being copied onto your computer.
I think the requirements were to install XSane, and XSane extras. Copy the configuration from your old machine, and copy scapscan_1212u_2.bin to the equivalent location on your new machine.
I think the last time we did this was back in 2010. I think these are the relevant threads from the archive. https://lists.alug.org.uk/pipermail/main/2010-October/028481.html

Does it still work on the old machine? It may be time to replace it anyway, it must be >10 years old! I don't have mine anymore, so apart from pointing you at the old thread, I can't help much.
I think try plugging it into the new machine, turning it on, then typing lsub if any of the output says "agfa" or "snapscan" then you may be able to get it to work. If not, then it's probably dead.
Hope that helps.
If it helps, I have a multifunction printer/scanner now, EPSON sx420w. Setting that up was a doddle. It worked straight out of the box with both simplescan and xsane.
