I think anjuta has great promise, and shall be keeping an eye on it
http://anjuta.sourceforge.net/
kdevelop I think is great in terms of functionality but dont feel that the text editor is very good
but its worth a look at, and is a lot more mature than anjuta. Personally I am no vi/emacs user and use possibly the 3rd most popular text editor nedit.
I am currently nearing the stage of release of a program initially called ode (owens development environment) this currently consists of a make button which displays your make output and start a nedit editor with the error line highlighted when you click on the error line. I plan to make the GUI configurable and a few more features. please mail me if you use nedit and I shall mail you the as is code/binarry.
kylix is a superb ide although rearly requires a 700Mhz + CPU this unfortunately requires you to learn Object Pascal not used outside Kylix and Delphi but it is a very good language (So good the creator of the language got the job of writing the Microsoft attempt to replace java C~) It does beat all other ide's I have used in terms of code completion where you will be reminded of methods names and functions and procedures parameters as you type.
there are also
http://www.thekompany.com/projects/kdestudio/
and several others that are not open source. but frankly I feel most of the ide's apart from anjuta and kylix/delphi have very poor text editors and since this for me is the most important feature I shall stick with nedit for C++ until anjuta is a little more mature using my ode with ctags, kylix is a definite for commercial X programming jobs though as I already know Delphi well, and have now found how to integrate kylix into my libc know lage.
So sorry for the lack of breath in this reply as there are at least 3 ide's I have missed out on.
Good luck with the programming I have found Linux to be a pleasure to code in compared with windows I hope you feel the same.
Owen
PS
emacs is I belive very much an ide with even integrated gdb debugging compiling etc but I find it just a little to steep a learning curve at the moment though often I feel I should know how to use it, while vi has been presented to me in such a way that I am convinced that vi is based on sound design and solid user interface and that it is through vi's strengths rather an obsevive retro culture in programmers that has led to vi having so many clones and having lasted forso many years without significant change.

Well ill start by saying thanx to the guy who sent me the deian cd(sorry for the long time this thanx has taken) =) but when i got it it was broken. I guess it happened in the postall system. No real problem coz i just purchased Mandrake 8.0. Its very nice and up 2 date compared with the old slackware and redhat ive been playing with.
I do a bit of programing in my spare time and wanted to know about the IDE's avalible for linux(free ones). What IDE's are avalible for Linux console, and X. I hate useing vi and emacs there interfaces are very hard to get used to(i know there gr8 programs). What do you use(if any of you program)?
Thanx for the help
