I had the same problems with Gentoo 1.4, the install process was totally different compared to the install instructions, and it lacked pcmcia modules, and was therefore useless for my laptop. I tried Gentoo 1.2, and assuming you have broadband, you can have it up and running in one whole day (and night).
I would say go for stage 2 or 3 tarballs (esp. if on dialup), but I just did it from stage one. Again, YMMV.
