There are two main contenders one can play with, and one more that's pay only.
What about MI/X from http://www.microimages.com/mix/? The Windows version is shareware, but if you use Windows, then you expect every closed-source vendor to hit you for money, no? The Mac version works well, but I've not tried the windows version as the university has a site licence for eXceed (which is less than perfect).
My experience is that this is very slow as well.
VNC (qv. Raphael) works, is free, but is slow.
Depends on the machines involved, but slower than X.
Much, much slower... Trust me, I've tried... :^)
