I figured it was something like that. Although I'm surprised that someone like Gandi isn't in the cheaper tier as I think they're pretty high volume.
Part of my thought process was that if different .com registrars charge the companies I might deal with different prices, it might also indicate reliability or some other useful metric - if OpenSRS is more expensive but better in some respect than one of the others then that's a value add. (I think that I personally have about 30 domains of which only one is .com, and 123-Reg is expensive across the board these where it used to be one of the cheapest, so any move is a good one on a price basis, and as far as reliability goes 123-reg is hardly to be recommended these days.)
I think that Mythic would be my preferred option were it not for the email forwarding costs, but looking through my domain "portfolio" that aspect is prohibitive for me - turns out I'm using it more than I realised - so Gandi is looking favourite.
Also, all types of domain are not the same price. See, for instance, the pricing for .xxx domain names, or .io...
Indeed, I'd certainly only compare like with like.
