Seriously, just put XBMC on it and give up with this Linux faffery if you just want to use it as a media centre.
+1 for XBMC can't really beat it, should cut down your boot time as well.
I can't imagine the XBox would make much of a desktop anyway due to it's low RAM and CPU power, if media and a few emulators is all you're after you should be happy with XBMC, MAMEoX. Best of all no keyboard or mouse required just the controller.
I'm not sure if some previous installation has screwed the modchip I've put in but it now comes up with a Gentoox ROM and that won't boot the XBMC disc I'm putting in so things are on hold at the moment while I resolve that. I've grabbed a copy of Auto-Installer.Deluxe.v4.40.iso and have tried installing that but with the problem shown.
I also have a remote control and I was hopeful that XBMC would be able to use and from what limited material I've read, I think it will. I could be proved wrong of course!
