Greetings All! My apologies for even hinting at any abominations, but I would like to know the answer to this problem -- and of all people I think ALUG may be able to help!

1and1 do webmail. You should be able to access your imap account from any browser (though you may need to enable something in your account settings - 1and1 are notorious for adding/changing functions without telling existing customers).
Or, following on from Tony's response about portableapps, why not just use a bootable portable linux such as http://www.porteus.org/. Plenty of other small linux distros can be set up with unetbootin. That way you can show off linuxy goodness to all your friends when out and about without touching their windows installations.
