Hi.
What are peoples recommendations for a lightweight distro?
It needs to run on a sub 300mhz machine.
I have been looking at DSL and DSLN but would prefer to stick with Xubuntu if possible. I havent been into Linux that long and have been using Ubuntu for the past couple of months.
I have also used Fedora in the past too but not too keen on it.

You could try Minix or some Linux 1.x from that vintage. ;-)
Seriously though: 1) Try Xubuntu and see if it's fast enough. Cut it down if it's sluggish. 2) How about the Fluxbox/Openbox window managers on a modern Linux distro?
Some distros are specifically made for i686 and won't run on older hardware, so watch out.

Hi Simon
I love Puppy Linux - i have used it on many c500 or thereabouts lappies and it flies along.
Howerver if you are an ubuntu fan have a look at WattOS - http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wattos
Regards,
ps apologies to Srdjan who i "replied" to first! oops!
I recently set up debian (Etch) on an NSLU2; http://www.nslu2-linux.org/
Works a treat!

In order:
Slitaz totally minimal but will run very fast on anything
Puppy: also fast and unlike DSL, currently active
TinyMe the minimal version of PCLinuxOS. Worth a try
Slax: if you like kde, this is the fastest kde you'll find, but not all the apps, though you can add them, but then it will slow a bit.
Vector: also kde, and also slackware based, worth trying
Debian minimal + fluxbox. More work, but its probably almost as fast as the slackware derivatives, and much more flexible.
As someone says, if the essential thing is speed, get used to Fluxbox and doing without Gnome or KDE.
