I turned my computer on today but it stopped whilst trying to load lilo (black screen with 'LI' at the top left. It usually says 'LILO 2.whatever).
After discovering the recovery disk section of the debian install CD I managed to get everything working again, but was wondering if someone might be able to suggest why it happened (and what I should do now)?
I'm running a reasonably up to date sarge (apt-get upgraded last week) and haven't booted into windows for ages so I don't think it can be anything to do with that). The harddrive is about 8 months old and it isn't making any funny noises).
Any suggestions please?
cheers,
BenE

The LILO User Guide says:
LI The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage boot loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be caused by a geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the map installer.
(search your system for User_Guide.ps ; the above quote is on p.42 of the version I have; 'locate lilo | grep User' should find it).
This doesn't explain why it should happen when you just boot up normally. Maybe it's something to do with your recent upgrade, or maybe a hardware hiccup. Keep an eye on things!
Good luck! Ted.

Ahhhh, so the 'LI' was an error message then? That was obvious, huh? ;-)
I'll back up my data and run fsck then, just in case my hard drive is on the way out.
(good job I bought some blank DVD's yesterday)
cheers,

Exactly the same happened to me a month ago, running sarge: on a reboot I got as far as "LI" then nothing, I could think of no reason why it had happened. I had to use a knoppix disk to rerun LILO and it has been fine since. I thought the hard drive might be failing and got a new one. Then when I upgraded a box last week from woody to sarge, the LILO rewrote the root mount point as /dev/sda2 instead of /dev/sda1. Again, this made no sense, but it must have been correct before the upgrade and I hadn't been prompted to change parameters during. Jen

I am sure you can run into issues with Lilo if something upgrades the kernel and Lilo isn't rerun to rebuild it's block pointer map thing.
It happened to me ages ago, SuSE (or more specifically YoU) expects you to be running Grub, so if it decides to replace the kernel image it doesn't bother to run Lilo afterwards. Due to some reason I can no longer fathom I was running Lilo on my old SuSE box and once after an update the machine refused to boot.
