I've just bought a new printer, the Canon BJC-1000, and found http://www.linuxprinting.org/ a useful assistance, including their scripts for getting it up and running. Sadly, the Epson Stylus 480 is classified on that site as "paperweight", sharing no features with the other Stylus printers before it, and people's comments have been quite biting.

A nice tweak which I shall document Real Soon Now is setting up a printer called "fax" which allows me to send faxes from any application.
