In a fit of brilliance, this is really a partially sighted guy stumbling around amid the rocks, I did

cat /dev/usb/hiddev0

and then touched the screen. This produces a string of garbage!

So I know that the usb link to the touch is working, its actually sending data. Why then does not the system pick it up and treat it like a mouse movement?
