Same project - the record, but I want to scan the sleeve and the label.
Plugged-in a scanner - HP ScanJet 4300C, switched it on, and the tube lit as it should.
Opened XSane scan.
It found the scanner and identified it. So far, so good. Adjusted parameters to desired resolution etc and told it to scan.
Acer began working hard according to the fan noise, scanner made a 'Tump' noise, and nothing else happened.
I suspect a faulty drive/carriage in the scanner (never used that one before).
Before I carry the heavy HP ScanJet downstairs to try that (it works - it prefers an UW SCSI connection, but it will work OK on USB) - is there anything I might have missed?
Running Squeeze with Gnome 'desktop'.

You did unlock the scanner head with the switch to protect the head when the scanner is transported?

Unlike the huge old UW SCSI one (which has a very evident device, it doesn't appear to have a lock.
Switch? (It was a charity shop 'find' and came without destructions. Since it cost IIRC £3.50, I half expected it to be duff,)

Thanks for looking - I'd already done that (very late last night) and intended to do some more next time I'm in wifi range - the 'bizsupport' site doesn't help a lot as, from the diagram, you can't tell which way to slide the lock - slide it so that the visible tab on the green ridgything docks, or slide it so that it undocks.
Tried it both ways, and neither works.
And the site assumes you have the destructions, and know the function of the buttons. So, I decided to find the maker's bumff and download it - later in the week.
Meanwhile, I've done some archaeology and unearthed the big bas^h^h^scanner I bought last century, and will use that.

So, what is it with scanners?
The newer ScanJet just goes 'Tump' and 'is not responding.
The old ScanJet works mechanically, but there's an I/O error.
The Primax Colorado triggers the riposte: 'No devices available'.
Before I commit felo de se or look for a big 'ammer, I might try another USB lead. The scanners have USB1 connections and the flaptop USB2 - could that be a problem?
Does this help at all?

Thanks - I'll have a look at it in Norwich - GPR here keeps dropping out - indeed, it dropped out yesterday afternoon and has only just been restored - only to drop out again for ten minutes while downloading the last e-mail...
