Hi Guys
We don't normally send out messages of a non-business related nature.
However this ones important. One of my best friends girlfriend is doing a power walk for charity. Its no ordinary power walk and its no ordinary charity.
* The charity is to help in the fight against breast cancer * Its a 26.2 mile walk * Shes doing it little more than a bra * Its the only Power Walking Marathon in the world * And it takes place over night!
The Moonwalk in London takes place overnight on 20 May 2006 when 15,000 women and a few brave men will power walk a marathon or half marathon around central London with the united aim of encouraging health awareness and raising £6 million for breast cancer research and cancer care.
I'm not capable of doing such an event, but I am willing to pass this onto as many people as possible.
Karina is an amazing lady, if you can spare any amount of money to sponsor her we would appreciate it.
Pictures of Karina (Right hand picture, middle) and the donation page can be found at the following URL

Thank you for taking the time to read this plea.
One last favor, would you please forward this onto everyone you know. The more people that read it, the more we may be able to make for charity.
Thank you!

Well, that's a good start - keep it up!
Looking at the content of the mail this would have been more suited to the alug-social list rather than alug main.
Cheers, Brett.

I know and I do apologize, but I figured that so many people are affected by this horrible disease the more people that see the e-mail the more chance of just one more person donating. Even a small amount helps. I know we can't change the world overnight but every small step helps (I guess that goes for Linux as well :)
Thanks Darren

I think more people are affected by coronary heart diseases, but I don't forward all Heart Foundation appeals to ALUG main! If everyone did, then this list would quickly drown in the spam.
Please use non-spam advertising instead, such as * sending stuff to social@lists.alug... where it's on-topic * putting a one-line link in your signature, so it appears as a tolerably small addition to your on-topic posts * putting it in your blog so it appears on planets and so on
Thanks,

I disagree, its something that I am very proud of a close friend for doing. I bet there are not many people on the list that would be able to do it.
I support the ALUG with free hosting and there are a few members who also have free hosting with us. I also have umpteen charity's who I provide free hosting for as every little bit helps.
If one e-mail on the list helps to raise even another £5 then I think its worth while.
If you don't support it, fine delete it. If you do then forward it onto your contacts.
I give what I can to this group and mostly off list to prevent being flamed, all I am asking is that one e-mail is accepted at face value. Your opinion is your opinion you have said yourself to me you keep off list to prevent being flamed yet I send one off topic e-mail and the first thing you do is shoot it down.
Why not just ignore it and get on with the day.

Because I've already ignored emails and got on with my day several hundred times already and I'm getting a bit tired of it. Fortunately the filters picked up most of them for me...

How can you disagree with that? Breast cancer killed less than 300 per million in 2004. Heart diseases killed over 430 per million. (From Mortality statistics: cause (Series DH2 no.31), ONS)

I thank you for that.

Because I want to raise the cost of posting off-topic chain emails to ALUG main until no-one thinks it worthwhile, not even for a fiver. This list is pretty good most of the time, so I'd be disappointed if it became a charity-centric www.spammuseum.co.uk
Hope that explains,

I appreciate that but the wider the audience the better. This email is not aimed at anyone in particular and i hope this thread will just stop from now on.
Its funny how many people have given support off list as they are too scared to post the comments on the list.
However its made me realize this is not the place for me, I have never used the list to push for more business and always given any members that have asked free hosting and discounted domains etc.. and never asked for anything in return. People are quick to e-mail me and ask for various things yet I have never asked anyone on of off list for anything and the one time I ask a favor and even apologize for the mail but just ask for one thing I get hassle for it. I'm my mind its quite pathetic of the attitude's for the sake of one email to be forwarded onto friends and family it may have been the difference of another £5 raised.
I hope none of you are affected now or in the future from cancer as just because the charity is for breast cancer its all helping to cure the same thing.
Anyway enough of my babbling my company will continue to support the hosting of the website and its members who already have free accounts. But this is my last message to the list as the next is a removal request.
Good luck in the future and thank you for the support I received off list.
Regards Darren

There are several list members who are directly affected by various diseases and we do not abuse the list as you did for the sake of five quid. Firstly, this list has more value if it stays on-topic. Secondly, there's a list for ALUGgers who are happy to get off-topic posts. Join at http://lists.alug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/social
And after this, you have no standing to call anyone pathetic:
I hope none of you are affected now or in the future from cancer [...]
