Can anyone explain why, when I download headers there will be (say) 5 unread in a group, but on accessing it, a couple will disappear without trace? It happens most times the server is accessed. They haven't been eaten by the killfile - indeed, on most gruppen I don't have any filters.

There's a couple of raisins for this. The kill filter you know about.
Another is if you have previously killed a thread. New msgs for that thread will disappear without trace on accessing the froup.
Less often it is because the header still exists on the server but the msg has been deleted as spam by the news server. (That may be unique to e-s).
