The title says it all really, is it possible to get a transparent background in the Gimp?
I have an image I've created with one of the script-Fu utilities and I can get the background window up but there seems to be no way to say 'no background'.

Yeah, I've never worked this out either (though I'm not a heavy GIMP user). The only way I know to do it is to choose a transparent background when you start a new image. pita, int it? Unless there's a proper answer to this...?

This might work:
Right-click in image to get context menu
In this menu, choose dialogues -> layers
Click on "background" in the list of layers in the dialogue
Use the "opacity" slider bar to vary the transparency of the layer.

Assuming you've just loaded in a flat (ie. single-layered) image, you need to right click the layer in the layers palette and select 'Add alpha channel'. Your layer now supports transparency, which means you can delete bits of it, eg. using the eraser or select / ctrl-K.
