Although I can now boot from my external drive and everything appears to be working, including X, I have a little cleaning up to do.

Whilst the system is booting I see a message from modprobe, repeated around 10 times - difficult to judge as they flash past, along the lines of 'cannot load /lib/modules/2.6.8/modules.dep - no such file or directory'.

This is rather strange because the path/file does exist, is correct and is on the root partition. In spite of that the whole system *appears* to be working. Can anyone suggest a reason for this message.
