I am getting fed up with having to use Windows whenever I want to read my mail, browse the web etc - it's becoming a real pain in the backside. Having totally failed to find anything of any use on getting my winmodem to work with Linux, I have decided to give in and buy myself a nice proper external modem for christmas.
Any recommendations?
Also, I need to sign up with a decent ISP, and would like to use one that offers a flat rate monthly fee, though I can't have broadband. Does anyone have a personal favourite here?
Thanks
Dave

US Robotics. (Or 3com, whoever makes them these days.) Although if you can get a PCI one still these days, I'd get one of theses. They can be slightly less latent.

Eclipse. For a fixed fee, they'll give you dial-up with a static IP (you can even chose rDNS for it). Although it does kick you off every so often (2 or 4 hours, depending on package) you can just instantly redial, and there are no limits. And because you've got a static IP, if you redial quickly enough, it doesn't really matter. All for less than 30 quid.

I have a PCI modem - it's an IBM 33L4618
Is this supposed to be Linux-friendly? I haven't had time to try it yet but hope to in the coming days .....
Best,

Possibly not. But maybe :-)

IBM have excellent tech support on their website - feed the part number into the serach box for links to many more docs.

FWIW I have owned upwards of a dozen modems over the past 16 years (oh the excitement - and expense - of upgrading to 2.4K :-) and the best I have used is my trusty Diamond Supra Express 56e PRO (e for external - internal is a winmodem AFAIK). Solid as a rock.
One going for 14 quid 2nd-user here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3445532689&cate...

Again, FWIW, if you're a heavy online user it's worth seriously considering Home Highway unless your exchange has a sensible ADSL trigger level. The line rental is basically the same as a second phone line although there is a higher installation fee as well (£75 a couple of years ago). The quick connect (2-4 secs) and stable, faster connection speed are much better than analogue.
For an ISP I use The Phone Co-op http://www.thephone.coop/internet/ and have a flat-rate FRIACO account. They are not the cheapest around (£14 plus vat) but I am happy to support a co-op and never have problems connecting. Big plus is that the account is not tied to a single phone line so I can use it when visiting family and their bill is not charged. (I have my phone calls with them as well but that's another story).

I have an Eicon Diva PCI ISDN TA going spare here if anyone wants one. Linux compatible (or at least SmoothWall knows about it). Is it worth a fiver? Also a Motorola BitSurfr external ISDN TA.
