I'm about to start another OU course and have been sent a CD ROM which has some course info on it. I know some of you have studied with the OU before so I wondered if you knew what software they use for the video clips? I tried asking computing support but 'they don't support Linux...' <sigh.> (The plan was to find out then ask you lot about it.) Thanks. Bev.

Erm, from memory they use lots of different software for video clips. You could try vlc or mplayer. There is a group out there for support of using OU software on linux, I can't recall if it is within that horrid OU conferencing thing or if there was a seperate website/mailing list.

There definitely use to be a Linux support group on the FirstClass conferencing system. IIRC there was a tutor called Bob Margolis who was a Linux advocate and all round good egg.

Have you tried browsing around the CD? Are the video clips in files by themselves? With names including extensions? If so, there'll probably be something that can play them. And $ file video.avi may give you some hint as to the encoding of the content. If not, are they trapped inside Windows executables? .exe or something? If that's the case maybe Wine might be able to run them?
