Are there any ALUG members on the list who have their Linux network connected to the internet via NTL Broadband?
An NTL sales rep rang me last night trying to get me to sign up for their broadband service. Unfortunately I think he was just reading a pre-prepared script as he was unable to answer many technical questions. In particular he was adamant that their cable modem box needed to be connected to a PC running Windows 98 or higher (*NOT* Linux). Has anyone managed to get round this as I would prefer my firewall (the PC on my network which will actually be connected to the NTL box) to continue to be Linux based rather trying to find a Windows based solution.

Yep, I've got it (512K) here, and I have a Linux firewall (a separate box). Works just fine, and wasn't hard to set up.
Cheers, Laurie.

You might as well do up a quick little guide for him...

And stick it upon the contrib area.

There's no way I have time to do that, but...
Here's the document that gave me the most help: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/index.html
And I used 2 identical NICs with iptables. Script to be had for the asking (but it's being rewritten as it's over-complex).
Cheers, Laurie.

You must have loads of time Laurie if you can manage to send this twice. :-)

Thanks for the link to that very useful and comprehensive web page Laurie. Yes, I would certainly be interested in a copy of your firewall script. I do however have a couple of further questions:
Firstly, getting back to this 150MB worth of software the sales rep was adamant I would have to load on a Windows machine... Looking at the web site you suggested am I correct in thinking that this software is just used purely for the complex looking multi-stage initial setup and registration process and that once the cable modem is up and running I can reformat the hard disk and use it for something a bit more useful? Or have I misunderstood and this software is something I will need to use regularly and so need to keep it knocking around on the disk forever in case of power cuts or guinea pigs chewing through ethernet cables etc?
Secondly, I notice that you mention that you use two identical NICs in your firewall, whereas the sales rep kept rabbiting on about a USB port interface on the cable modem (though now I think of it may have mentioned an ethernet port option). The PC I currently use on my dial-up is an old Pentium 1 machine without a USB port and only one ethernet card. Whatever happens I will therefore have to buy either a USB port card or an additional ethernet card for it specifically for this cable modem. Is the ethernet/ethernet firewall simply easier to setup than a USB/ethernet firewall or does the ethernet/ethernet option have a performance advantage?
Ian.
