aahh.. okies.. well the latest version of rpm keep the old copies of any config files, they are moved to *.rpmnew or *.rpmsave depending on wether it's new or saved ;).. this has only happened in the latest version of rpm, from about RH 6.1 onwards I think...

well.. it's possible to do a network upgrade from a ftp/http/nfs server if you want to give that a try, either way you will still need to use a large quantify of bandwidth to get the files from a remote server to your machine...
