I heard on the wireless today that the Queen has just given Bill Gates an Honourary Knighthood. I wonder who recomended that, and why?

The Foriegn Secretary Jack Straw suggested for services to UK business, i.e. for employing 2000 staff. IBM employ 3,500 at their HQ Portsmouth alone, while the Greenock IBM facility started the Silicon glen trend and has it's own railway station, it's that big. ARM and co have done far more than Microsoft.

I have an idea it's because of the money he's pouring into research into killer diseases, especially HIV/AIDS.

"The idea that Bill Gates has appeared like a knight in shining armour to lead all customers out of a mire of technological chaos neatly ignores the fact that it was he who, by peddling second-rate technology, led them into it in the first place." (Douglas Adams)
