I seem to have lost my broadband connection which has been running trouble free for four months.
It happened sometime on Tuesday. It was going OK in the morning but later in the day I couldn't connect and that has been the case since (I only turn it on when I use my computer rather than having it running continuously).
The connection has been trouble free since the first day. Although a while back I did experience something similar but it was back up within 24 hours. (But at that time I didn't look into the 'guts' of my router to see what was actually going on).
I have a D-Link DSL-504T. The carrier seems to be up but there is no connection. This shows in the router's log:
Sep 8 12:00:06> Valid Configuration Tree Sep 8 12:00:10> Firewall NAT service started Jan 1 01:01:00> Bridge Created: br0 Jan 1 01:01:00> Bridge Interface Added: eth0 Jan 1 01:01:04> DSL Carrier is training Jan 1 01:01:14> DSL Carrier is up Jan 1 01:01:19> pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0 Jan 1 01:01:19> Connect: ppp0 {--}
I have tried resetting the router's firmware and setting up the connection info again but it still won't connect, even when I explicitly tell it to.
It is almost as if the 'other end' is not accepting my login/password any more.
I seem to remember coming across a login/password on the net you could use to check that your connection was working but I haven't been able to find it again.
There could be several places where the error could be - router, telephone exchange (Norwich), ISP (Tiscali/UKFSN).
Can some one explain what is happening and how I can get it working again.
TIA

Hi,
I occassionaly see problems where BTs RADIUS server gets itself in a twist and assigns me a BT Openwound IP address instead of my Claranet one. Hence my data doesn't go anywhere.
Check that you still have Line Sync with the DSLAM at your local exchange. My Alcatel modem has a light on the front, if this is on it can see the DSLAM.
Try depowering your router, waiting 5mins for BT's RADIUS server to realise you've disconnected and try again.

Thanks for the advice. I am afraid it had no effect. All the external lights on the router show everything as OK.
I am waiting to hear back from UKFSN to see if they can shed any light on things.

The username you're after is: bt_test@startup_domain
Any password will do (although I seem to recall that there does have to be something there other than blank).
Google on bt_test for more info.
Last time I saw this, the ISP had cut the customer off for non-payment of the service. The fault was with the ISP (they'd screwed up the direct debit), so its worth checking you have actually paid/been charged.

Thanks. However, I couldn't connect with that either nor with several others that I found via googling.

I suspect/hope you may be right. UKFSN got my account all confused and after several months I had to remind them to bill me! It could be something still hanging over from that.
I have told them about my problem and I am still waiting to hear back from them. They aren't exactly fast in responding. Having to rely on dialup is like being back in the Dark Ages as I have quickly got used to broadband.

Tell me about the dialup thing. I just moved house BT were supposed to move our ADSL and PSTN phone line on the same day as part of the "homemovers trial", they managed to screw up the installation of the new phone line (took 12 days to even get a phone line) and they broke the ADSL homemovers service the day before we moved, so we had to cease the ADSL. Also to add insult to injury we now have to wait another 2 weeks before the details of the new line filter through the BT systems so we can place an order for a new ADSL line.....
Oh well, if anyone sent me mail in the past 2 weeks then I am sure I will read it in the next couple of days.
