Are there any chess players out there? I'm looking for software that supports the playing of chess games via e-mail. There's quite a list on Sourceforge and Freshmeat. Any feedback on the relative merits or personal experiences of chess software for GNU/Linux would be appreciated.

xboard comes with cmail, which is a perl script that allows this. xboard is quite nice. cmail relies on /usr/bin/mail for the actual transfer.
