From: Keith Watson on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 3:03 PM to ALUG Social List...
Some time back, well a long time back, when I first joined this list, in a sudden fit of enthusiasm I suggested we got some T-shirts and/or Sweatshirts printed up with Tux and the ALUG acronym over the left breast. I found a company on Dereham who could do this for us but needed a minimum order of 10 garments (mixed sizes and colours) and I think the cost (at that time) was around £15 for a sweatshirt.
I haven't dropped the idea (yet) just been overwhelmed by other things :o) and I have also become aware of other companies in the area who offer this service.
A number of you expressed interest at the time, so can anyone who is still interested please reply to this so I can get an idea of the numbers?
Please indicate;
- are you interested in a T-shirt (more than one)?
if so what would be the sort of price range you would consider (min - max)?
and what size (male/female)?
and colours?

for comparison purposes take a look at http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk/index.php?PAGE=18 , http://www.gifts4geeks.co.uk and http://www.cashncarrion.co.uk/
(Not sure if I should x-post this to Main as well?)

I'd be interested, my preferences are to follow.
But how about we make a small profit on these shirts and then donate the profits to a nominated charity (or even a free software project that needs contributions.) I know it would create the mother of ALUG arguments about which cause gets the money, but it's just an idea.

Damm! MJ and I had already arranged to split the proceeds between us!!
Never mind MJ, there'll be other opportunities! ;o)
On a serious note, what's the general feeling about this? and would there be any legal complications?
As not all ALUGers are awash with spare cash how about a voluntary donation of 50p or £1 per item? (this might be a way of getting round any legal issues with reselling at a profit).
As for the good cause I'd nominate the AFFS.
As an aside, I'm considering sending an order off to the Linux Emporium http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk/index.php?PAGE=21 for some Tux PC and lapel badges, and, perhaps, the odd Tux soft toy or two. If I get some extras I could bring them along to meetings and pass them on at cost (plus a voluntary donation?). Any interest?

I can get a legal opinion on this ... my company secretary is an advocate, but she needs to know if ALUG has any legal status at all. If ALUG is just a group of individuals with no legal status, there is no problem .. if we're a registered organisation,or have a bank account or anything like that, it can change things... and require us to declare the income and account for it. Come back to me if you have more details and want me to ask her more.

ALUG does not exist in any formal way. No-one can legitimately claim to be ALUG, although if you try, whether you get away with it depends how much you are supported or contradicted by others, how people regard those supporters/detractors and how much of a brass neck you have. Trust metrics, if you will.
Ceci n'est pas un ALUG.
