What was the problem?

The drivers are binary only (no source) and they can be a little tricky to get right, but I was using a hacked about version of Xfree 4.0 and various reasons. I do know one of our developers has hacked around the kernel and various other bits with kernel 2.4.0 to get it working correctly... I also seem to remember that the instructions are slightly wrong and I had a library in the wrong place that upset everything. I may be doing a re-install of Debian soon (if i can be bothered) and will have to get it all working again so I will make some notes.
